I actually bought this wonderful adaptation on audio cassette when it first came out; and while I'm happy to still have a working Walkman to enjoy it, I'm happy it's available as an MP3 as well. Even though the story was written in the early 1930s, it remains a classic of the science-fiction genre -- the first story to feature a genuine alien, rather than a human being dressed up in a bad costume (so to speak) & acting from familiar human motivations, it remains a gripping & moving tale some 80 years later. Tweel is not only science fiction's first real alien, with his own reasons for existing, he remains one of its most memorable & endearing aliens as well.The audio adaptation itself gets everything just right & works beautifully as radio drama. The writers have incorporated newer information about Mars seamlessly, adding to but in no way changing the narrative. It's still Earthman Dick Jarvis making his way across the Martian landscape, accompanied by his newfound alien companion Tweel, discovering one otherworldly marvel after another as he tries to survive & reach the rocket that brought his team to Mars. The music is subtle, never obtrusive; the script is faithful to the story; the Martian vistas & its wonder's unfold vividly in the mind's eye. A perfect return to the Golden Age -- most happily recommended!
This was before I realized this product is avalible on iTunes. I loved the short story and wanted to see how this did as an audio play. I liked it for its great use in sound (Tweel's voice was excellent), the piano score at the beginning and end, developed characters, and a focused and amusing storyline that I think sci-fi fans can relate to.A great experience, worth a rent!
I recently purchased this mp3 audiobook for a rock bottom price from a source other than Amazon, and after listening to the entire book, the story itself is still interesting even after some 70 years since its creation by Stanley Weinbaum. The characters are still relevant and the overall concept is still compelling. However, the narration by Jim Roberts is the worst reading of a book I've ever heard. I've listened to several hundred audiobooks performed by dozens of readers, and overwhelming majority have been "performed" not narrated. Readers like Dick Hill, Scott Brick, Len Cariou, Titus Welliver, Christopjer Lane, Christopher Graybill, January Lavoy, Ray Porter, and others actually "perform" the book rather than just "read" it, giving the listener the sense of being involved in the book and not just hearing someone speak the words. Their phrasing, pacing, inflection, dialects, intonation, timing, and emphasis make the words "come alive" for listeners. In "A Martian Odyssey" Jim Roberts sounds like the archetype of a reading every word lifelessly - there's no dialects used, no variation in intonation, his pacing is erratic, and his timing is inconsistent - all of which makes his accent more noticeable and which pulls the listener even further out of he flow of the story. It's clear that Jim Roberts is not a professional reader, and I'd really like to hear this story again but done by a reader of the caliber of Dick Hill or Ray Porter. Again, thumbs up for story, thumbs down for the narrator. Of course, this is just my opinion. YMMV.
